What a dryer booster fan actually fixes
A choked long run makes the dryer cook itself. Heat backs up in the drum. The thermal fuse trips, then the element or thermostat goes. That failure costs more than the vent work. Clothes taking two or three cycles November through March is the early warning, and damp intake air plus a restricted duct is usually why.
A fan is not a substitute for a clean duct. The run gets cleaned, sealed and proven first. Then the fan mounts downstream, on rigid metal, joints wrapped in foil tape. No screws inside the duct. Screw tips grab lint. It must be a lint-tolerant dryer booster, not a bathroom inline fan.
Switching matters. A pressure switch senses airflow and can foul with lint. A current-sensing relay at the dryer cord is generally steadier. Either way the fan needs power at its location, and attics in two-story tract homes rarely have a receptacle nearby.
Good candidates: attic and roof-terminated runs of 20-35 ft with 3-5 elbows. Poor candidates: garage-wall and hall-closet short runs of 4-10 ft in postwar ranches. There the cause is crushed flex behind the dryer or a clogged hood, and a fan hides it.
Mount it where a person can reach it. The impeller loads with lint too, and roof-cap ash and pasture pollen speed that up.
