My house is one of the original ranch homes here and the duct is old crimped metal — is that worth cleaning or should it just be replaced?

Every added foot and every elbow slows the air and gives lint somewhere to settle. A newer home with a long vertical run to the roof can be dirtier at seven or eight years old than a neighbor's short side-wall run from the seventies. If your dryer is on an interior wall and you can't see the termination from the ground, assume it's a long run and treat it accordingly.

What actually goes wrong with vents in this area?

Rebuilt homes with a long run to a roof cap take longer, require getting up on the roof, and sometimes need work from both ends. Beyond that, it comes down to how much is actually in there and whether we find nesting or a hood that needs replacing. We'd rather look at your setup and tell you where you land before you commit to anything than guess from a phone description.

How fast can you get out here, and do you do same-day?
